WhatsApp Pricing Change from 1 October 2026: What Businesses Must Know

WhatsApp pricing update for businesses

If your business talks to customers on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the WhatsApp Business API), your bill is about to change. From 1 October 2026, Meta will start charging for messages that are free today — including the everyday replies you send when a customer messages you first.

Here is what is changing, who it affects most, and the one thing you should check before 30 September.

How WhatsApp pricing works today

Since 1 July 2025, Meta has charged per message, not per conversation. What you pay depends on the type of message and whether the customer has messaged you recently.

  • Marketing templates — offers, announcements, festive greetings — are always charged.
  • Utility templates — order confirmations, delivery updates, payment reminders — are charged only when sent outside the customer service window.
  • Authentication templates — one-time passwords — work the same way as utility.
  • Service messages — normal free-form replies such as text, photos and documents — are free, but can only be sent inside the customer service window.

The customer service window is the 24 hours after a customer last messaged you. Inside it you can reply freely. Outside it, you can only send an approved template.

What changes on 1 October 2026

Two things that are free today become paid.

1. Service messages are charged. Every reply you send inside the 24-hour window is billed per delivered message. Meta says the rate will be the same as the utility and authentication rate for the customer's country, and there are no volume discounts for service messages.

2. Utility templates inside the window are charged. An order confirmation or delivery update sent while the customer is in an open conversation with you is no longer free.

Marketing templates are not affected by this change.

Who will notice it most

This depends on how you use WhatsApp.

  • Mostly promotions and broadcasts? Very little changes — marketing templates were already charged.
  • Mostly customer support, enquiries and order updates? You will see a new line on your bill where there used to be zero, because most of your messages are replies inside the 24-hour window.
  • Automated replies and chatbots? Each message the bot sends in reply is a service message, so a flow that sends several short messages costs more than one that sends a single clear one.

AI agent replies are already charged separately: since 1 August 2026, Meta Business Agent messages cost $2.00 per million tokens, which Meta estimates at about 4–5 US cents per message.

Before 30 September: add a payment method

This is the most urgent part. Meta has said that if a business sending through the WhatsApp Business Platform does not have a payment method on file by 30 September 2026, it will stop delivering service messages from 1 October, when they become chargeable.

In practice, that means your replies to customers would stop reaching them. To avoid it:

  1. Open your WhatsApp Business Account in Meta Business Manager.
  2. Check that a valid payment method is added and active.
  3. If a partner or agency manages WhatsApp for you, ask them to confirm this for your account this week.

How to keep your costs under control

Once service messages are paid, every message counts. A few simple habits help:

  • Say more in fewer messages. One complete reply costs less than three short ones.
  • Review your automated flows. Remove steps that only say "Thanks!" or "Please wait" and combine messages where you can.
  • Answer the common questions up front. A clear first reply with prices, timings and next steps saves back-and-forth.
  • Check the rate for your market. Rates differ by country. Meta publishes rate cards, including in Indian rupees, on the WhatsApp Business website.
  • Watch your monthly volume. Utility and authentication rates get cheaper at higher monthly volumes, and the tiers reset every month.

What does not change

  • You still need an approved template to message a customer who has not written to you in the last 24 hours.
  • Marketing templates are charged as before.
  • The 24-hour customer service window works the same way — only the price of what you send inside it changes.

The bottom line

WhatsApp remains where most Indian customers already are, so the answer is not to use it less — it is to use it well. The businesses that get caught out will be the ones that miss the payment deadline or keep chatty automations that send five messages where one would do.

Add your payment method before 30 September, look at your busiest flows, and make every message count. For the bigger picture, read our complete guide to the WhatsApp Business API. If you are not sure how this affects your setup, talk to us.
